Essential tremor (ET) is a disease characterized by involuntary rhythmic movements (tremor) of certain muscle groups in one or more body parts of unknown cause.
It mostly affects the hands, arms, or fingers symmetrically; but sometimes involves other body parts like the head or voice.
Essential tremor can be an action tremor and it intensifies when one tries to use the affected muscles during voluntary movements such as drinking, eating and writing or it can be a postural tremor, present with sustained muscle tone like head tremor. But it is not a resting tremor like seen in parkinson's disease patients.
Essential tremor disease is progressive, and it is the most common movement disorder in the world. Although it can occur at any age, Its onset is usually after age 40. The cause is still unknown. Diagnosis can be made by clinical evaluation
